They signify the crowd size, the level of hipster-ness (wouldn't be a wellington activity without a hipster measure), and the level of energy that is produced in the performance.
I've also been further refining typography and playing with the imagery some more, just to figure out how to incorporate all elements onto the spread to give a good sense of design communication and good visual flow.
